Library Special Research Fund: Guidelines for Applicants
Purpose:
The main thrust of
the Special Research Fund is to support Personal research in progress by an
individual member of Faculty.
It can extend to more than one member of Faculty
where a proposal is in support of a joint
research project.
It is not intended to support research where other funding is being received for the project in question. (If Faculty are involved in funded research, which will require significant additional information resources, it is expected that this would be costed as part of the research bid).
Note also, there may be other sources of funding available from the Library to support new staff, new programmes etc., so if in doubt about the appropriateness of the Special Research Fund, please contact the Librarian in advance of submitting an application.
Scope:
Applications for
research support should be in respect of material, which would not normally be
purchased from a Department's own Library budget.
Categories of Material and Services which qualify for support:
Note: Where books etc. are purchased from the fund, these will be catalogued and will, if required, be given on extended loan to the requestor for the duration of the project. The material will then be returned to the main Library stock.
Extent of Fund:
On an annual
basis, the total fund represents 1.5% of the materials budget allocated to the
Librarian.(As an example, the fund amounts to €13,150 for 2005/06).
Making an Application:
Applications should be made to the Librarian in the
first instance using the Library Special Research Fund Application Form. If possible, these should
be received 10 days before the Library Committee meets (See
Meetings Calendar). The Library Finance Sub-Committee, which meets
prior to the Library Committee meeting, will review the application
and make a recommendation to Library Committee. The Librarian will
then
write to inform the applicant(s) of the
outcome. The approved allocation will be transferred to a separate research
budget within the requestor's departmental library budget.
